Friko’s ‘Something Worth Waiting For’ Signals a Bold Step Forward in Indie Rock

15 april 2026

Chicago-based indie band Friko is set to release its much-anticipated sophomore album, Something Worth Waiting For, on April 24 through ATO Records. The album marks an important evolution for the group, whose distinctive blend of intensity and emotional depth has already made a notable impact on the modern indie scene.

New Lineup, Renewed Energy

This release is particularly significant as it represents the debut of guitarist Korgan Robb and bassist David Fuller, who joined the band following extensive touring in support of their debut record. With vocalist-guitarist Niko Kapetan and drummer Bailey Minzenberger rounding out the ensemble, Friko’s refreshed lineup has fostered a more dynamic and creative collaboration. The band’s chemistry, sharpened on the road and through sharing stages with acts like The Flaming Lips and Modest Mouse, translates into a more charged and unpredictable sound throughout the new album.

The production of Something Worth Waiting For was helmed by John Congleton, a Grammy-winning producer known for his work with renowned artists such as St. Vincent and Angel Olsen. Recording took place in his Los Angeles studio, where the focus was on capturing authentic feeling and immediacy rather than technical perfection. This approach has yielded a raw and direct sonic character, pushing Friko’s artistry into bolder territory and setting this album apart from their earlier work.

Conceptually, the album is rooted in the themes of movement and ongoing development—exploring the journey itself rather than fixating on a final destination. The band uses this motif to thread together songs that oscillate between styles, reflecting a broad emotional arc without prescribing solid resolutions. This motif of restless progression resonates throughout the record, as Friko channels uncertainty and anticipation into their music.

Musically, Something Worth Waiting For traverses a rich spectrum, bridging noiserock grit with more experimental and symphonic passages that evoke the adventurous spirit of the 1970s. The result is a collection of tracks that challenge as much as they engage, promising the listener a gripping experience across its nine-song tracklist: “Guess,” “Still Around,” “Choo Choo,” “Alice,” “Certainty,” “Hot Air Balloon,” “Seven Degrees,” “Something Worth Waiting For,” and “Dear Bicycle.”

The album follows in the wake of Friko’s debut, Where we’ve been, Where we go from here (2024), which garnered significant critical acclaim and was included on several year-end lists by outlets such as Pitchfork and NME. With their follow-up, Friko appears poised to not only consolidate their place within the genre, but to expand the boundaries of what indie rock can sound and feel like in the current era.

As anticipation builds ahead of the release, Something Worth Waiting For stands as a testament to Friko’s commitment to growth, risk-taking, and expressive musicianship. The album’s emphasis on journey over arrival is likely to resonate deeply with listeners old and new, sustaining the band's reputation as one of the most compelling voices in contemporary indie music.
