Frida Franzén Unveils Acoustic EP "Ovännen" with Nostalgic First Single

On May 29, Frida Franzén will release her new acoustic EP, "Ovännen," marking a creative phase that showcases both fresh material and stripped-down versions of songs from her previous album, "Tidens väv." The project’s first single, "Trollbäcken," became available to listeners on May 8, offering a preview of the EP’s delicate arrangements and introspective lyrical themes.
"Ovännen" stands out for its intimate sound, characterized by gentle piano lines, acoustic guitar, and unembellished vocals, providing a space for reflection on time, memory, and personal transformation. Franzén herself emphasizes that this project captures the heart of her musical identity, drawing deeply from the Swedish singer-songwriter tradition. The approach to these songs is raw and authentic, with arrangements that mirror the form in which the tracks were originally conceived.
The single "Trollbäcken" serves as both a nostalgic and bittersweet homage to the Sweden of the 1980s. Through its lyrics, the song recalls suburban childhood, community caregivers, carefree play, and the shared silence of national events, encapsulating memories that link personal experiences to broader cultural moments. The restrained piano and steady acoustic guitar create a sonic backdrop that evokes both longing for the past and a subtle sense of forward movement.
The EP was recorded live over the course of a single day at Studio Skutan. Franzén collaborated closely with producer and engineer Ruben Engzell to capture the live essence of each performance. For the recording, Franzén provided vocals and played guitar, while Mattias Albinsson contributed on both piano and guitar. The resulting tracks capture the immediacy of a live session, lending the collection a sense of unity and presence.
Frida Franzén first launched her solo career in 2022 with "Visdom om år," an album that earned recognition for its honest songwriting and direct expression. Since her debut, she has established herself as a distinctive voice within the Swedish rock and folk song tradition. Earlier in 2025, she released "Tidens väv," an album revolving around themes of middle age and the increasing value of time—a motif that is further explored in "Ovännen" through its reflective reinterpretations and new compositions.
Although details such as the total number of tracks and information about further collaborations remain undisclosed, "Ovännen" represents a significant step forward in Franzén's artistic journey. The EP promises to resonate with listeners through its combination of nostalgia, sincerity, and grounded musicianship, reaffirming her role as a thoughtful and evocative figure on the Swedish music scene.
