There are concerts that simply entertain, and then there are those rare moments that completely reshape your perception of live music. When bass virtuoso Mohini Dey stepped onto the stage at Slaktkyrkan, the venue quickly transformed into something far greater than an ordinary club. It became a temple of rhythm, fearless technique, and uncompromising musical devotion.

From the very first note, it was clear this would not be an ordinary evening. With astonishing dexterity and absolute control, Dey guided her instrument through intricate chord progressions and shifting rhythmic patterns that drew audible reactions from the captivated audience. The performance was a powerful blend of technical brilliance and emotional intensity, where every detail carried both energy and precision. The feeling throughout the room was unmistakable: this was a musician in complete harmony with both her instrument and the space surrounding her.

One of the evening’s most fascinating elements was the interplay between Dey and the drummer. On several occasions, almost playful musical conversations emerged, where the drummer would perform a rhythmic sequence and Dey would answer with her bass. Later, the interaction evolved into something even more experimental as she began singing rhythmic, almost nonsensical melodic syllables while simultaneously echoing them on the bass. The drummer joined in vocally as well, creating an intricate exchange where rhythm, voice, and instrumentation merged into one pulsating whole. It felt spontaneous and improvised, yet entirely controlled — as if the music was being created in real time directly in front of the audience.

Between songs, Dey’s warmth and humor constantly shone through. She spoke about her background in Bollywood, shared her love of food, and delivered several playful remarks that filled the venue with laughter. This became especially apparent before songs like “First Food Then You” and “Meat Eater,” where her lighthearted comments about food and vegetarianism created an intimate and relaxed atmosphere between artist and audience.

What ultimately made the concert so remarkable was not only the extraordinary musicianship, but also the playful unpredictability and infectious joy that ran through the entire performance. There was a constant sense of curiosity in the music — a willingness to explore new directions and push the boundaries of what their interaction could become. When Dey finally revealed that her long-awaited second album is on the way, it became clear that the audience had witnessed the beginning of an exciting new chapter in her artistic journey.

As the final notes faded and the audience slowly began to leave, a distinct feeling lingered in the air: that something truly special had just taken place. For a few hours, Slaktkyrkan had become a space devoted entirely to rhythm, improvisation, and deeply human musical expression.
