Watching an artist perform in broad daylight, stripped of the atmosphere created by lighting or nighttime anticipation, lays bare both strengths and weaknesses. Olivia Lobato's appearance at Stockholm's Kulturfestival is a prime example. The essentials are in place: her voice is steady and clear, the songs carry an unmistakably current pop vibe, and the audience responds warmly right from the beginning – you hear applause, see smiles, and many sing along during the choruses.

Yet, the elusive sense of unity and presence never fully materializes. The concert lacks cohesive direction, as if it is constantly searching for its core. Lobato exudes energy: she moves confidently, takes up space, and remains physically engaged throughout. However, the expressive gestures sometimes seem to serve as ends in themselves, drawing attention away from the music rather than enhancing it. In the starkness of daylight, when every movement and expression is visible, the disconnect between performance and substance is magnified. The attempts at showmanship – sweeping glances and dramatic motions – occasionally appear unanchored in the actual material, making genuine presence harder to find.

This real sense of presence – the intangible but vital star quality – is mostly missing during the performance. Experienced concertgoers can identify the difference between an artist who commands the stage, directing and captivating the audience, and one who is still searching for that spark. Lobato seems to waver here: she relies on her voice and songs, but not entirely. The pace and energy are consistent, but the memorable peaks do not come; the intensity is lacking.

The knowledge that Lobato is capable of so much more, having delivered more dynamic performances in the past, makes the overall impression more frustrating. It is a show that does not quite fall flat, but also never soars – an example of untapped potential. It is not a bad show, but it is not one that lingers in memory. It serves as a reminder that live performance requires more than just technical musical skill: it asks the artist to be present in every gesture, to inhabit every note. We know Lobato can do just that – today, though, it was left unfulfilled.
