David Ritschard at Gröna Lund: Stories, Southern Suburbs, and Community Singing

When David Ritschard performed at Gröna Lund yesterday, a loyal and slightly older audience had gathered in front of the stage. It quickly became clear that many in the crowd had a strong connection to both the music and the lyrics.
The music was new to me, but it was easy to understand why David Ritschard appeals to so many people. His lyrics revolve around working-class life, the southern suburbs of Stockholm, and people who feel almost familiar, as if you’ve met them yourself. There are also clear references to Hammarby and life around Södermalm and Huddinge. Much of it feels taken straight from everyday life, told in a way that brings to mind older Swedish folk traditions and narrative-driven rock music.
The evening’s setlist included songs such as “När du reser dig,” “Sockenplan,” “Rosenlund Revisited,” and “Huddinge Huddinge.” The audience sang along enthusiastically during several songs, and the atmosphere in front of the stage felt warm and relaxed rather than chaotic. It was obvious that many in the crowd shared the same references and nostalgic view of southern Stockholm and an older version of the city.
Musically, David Ritschard moves between folk ballads, folk rock, and americana. Songs like “Cowboy” and “Som en Hank Williams” gave the concert the feeling of Swedish everyday life mixed with country influences — though with commuter trains and suburbs instead of American highways.
This was not a concert built around big effects or spectacular stage production. Instead, its strength came from the closeness to the audience and the stories within the songs. When the concert ended with “Nya Slussen” and “Vi ses snart igen,” the audience left Gröna Lund smiling, with the feeling that they had experienced something genuine.
